MCC Client on HD2 hangs
« on: September 20, 2010, 22:48:46 »
Hi there,

Thanks for what seems to be an excellent application which I'm just dying to start trying out :-)

However, I can't seem to make it work. The client just keeps hanging with the message "Connecting to computer..."

Setup:
The computer is a Win7 Ultimate with Media Center which I configured the MCC Server to use as player application. The port is the default. The client is an HD2 with the .NET Compact Famework 3.5 installed.
The version of MCC is 1.3.2.

I don't have Bluetooth on the computer, so I use only WLAN. I ticked the boxes "Allow network connections" and "Force Network connection" on the client. On the server I ticked the WLAN box and unchecked the Bluetooth one.

Symptoms:
I obviously have TCP/IP v6 on the computer since I currently need to use IP-number, otherwise I get the "The address requested in the protocol is not compatible." error.

When connecting using the IP-number I get a warning from McAffe (since it controls the Windows Firewall) that the MCC server is trying to accept a incoming connection. When I press ok (I also have pressed the Firewall setup button in the Server Settings dialog) it just hangs as described above. This at least showst hat the client is connecting to the computer with the  MCC-server.

I have also tried to disable the Firewall completely, but that dos not change anything (just that I don't get the warning from McAffee).

Is there anything I can try to do, or do you have a logging version of the client and server so that one can trace waht is happening?

Best regards,
Daniel

Hi DeeDee,

it looks like you have set all settings right. Did I understand you right that you have enabled IPv6 and IP(v4)?
You have to use the IPv4 number (192.168.0.1 or something like that). MCC can't connect to IPv6. But I think you got this already. Is the firewall promting every time you connect to MCC over and over again? Did you tried to save the setting for MCAfee and then try to connect again?

There is no special trace or log to look at. Normally you will get an error message. It's very strange that you get no error and it hangs. Something in the firewall is holding the connection and is never releasing it.

EDIT: Did you disabled the McAfee or the windows firewall or both?

Hi,

Yes it is really strange behaviour.

I use the IPv4 IP-number, and that triggers the firewal warning when connecting.

I turn off the McAffee firewall, which also turns off the Windows firewall (I think it actually
uses the Windows firewall and that McAffee only have an integrated interface to the Windows firewall, because when trying to change the settings of the Windwos firewall it says it is controlled by McAffee). So there should be no firewall active. The firewall just gives me a warning once, so it seems to be the reply to the first connection that the client is waiting for.

There should also not be anything strange with the connection between the HD2 and the computer since I actually can browse the computers file system from the HD2 as well.

What are the firewall rules that are automatically being set by the server when pressing that buttion in the interface (ports and protocol)? Maybe I can try to set them manually in McAfee interface as well.

One other thing might be if you have some kind of debug version of the program that you maybe use yourself when testing it during development that you could send me and I could install that instead?

Hi,

the rule MCC Server adds to the windows firewall is:
Code: [Select]
netsh firewall add allowedprogram "c:\programme\Media Center Control\MCC Server.exe" "MCC Server"  ENABLE
It's a rule which allows an executable to communicate with all ports and protocols.

Hello,

The rule was there and should obviously make it wok regardsless of if the firewall was disabled or not...

Anyway - life's to short for struggling with networks, so I bought a BT-dongle and connected that way instead. Voila :-)

Regards,
Daniel

I also have this problem.

Everything is setup correctly to use host computers static ip address. Connect via network is enabled. Have also tried hostname.

The app just waits for connection and then hangs the phone HD2 needing a battery disconnect. Windows firewall is currently disabled on this machine. Using a bluetooth dongle is not an option.

I can connect to the host computer with other apps and browse all files..

Hi paulw,
did you se the cancel button when the client tries to connect? What happens if you click it? Ther should be an error message.
