Cannot connect to laptop from EVO
« on: January 19, 2011, 01:32:33 »
I've spent days trying to get MCC to work with a new Windows 7 laptop without any luck.  I have the software all installed in Windows Media Center, it says the add-on is enabled when I open it up.  I can ping my Android 2.2 Evo from the laptop; I can ping the router from the Android, but I CANNOT ping the Win7 laptop in any manner, whether I use the computer name or the verified IP address.  I have that MAC address filtering on, but its in the router set up, and wifi works fine on the phone.  I got the Windows Firewall set up properly.  I get Host not resolved... I think I also got something about Destination Host.

I turned off the Lookout security software on the Android.  I am not super knowledgeable about networking, but I have about given up.  My son who is a networking expert of sorts can't figure it out either.  Any ideas anyone might have would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

I am replying to myself, in case anyone visits here... what I have accomplished so far:
- I can now ping from my Android 2.2 Evo phone to the other two Windows 7 computers on my network, that I could not do for days.
- I have carefully followed the setup instructions from the MCC manual for the server to be connected to Windows Media Center on my desktop.
- When I load WMC on my desktop, it shows the MCC add-on set up successfully.
- The Android phone software is installed and this is where  problems still exist.

I put in the computer name I want to connect to (the desktop) but it is trying to connect to my broadband provider (i.e., and address starting with 64, such as 64.something.something) or could it be trying to connect with the Sprint network???  But of course I am trying to connect to a computer on my internal network - that has an address in the format of 192.168.0.122 as an example. The Android software immediately reports it cannot find that address.

ANY IDEAS of why it is insisting on trying to connect to the broadband provider instead of a local machine on my home network?  That seems to be the last hurdle I face.

I DO NOT at this time wish to connect to the MCC server from OUTSIDE my home network whilst somewhere else.  I only care about using it as a remote control whilst at home. I have no desire to schedule recordings from a distant location.  I do not even have a TV line in that computer.  I ONLY want to control online video such as Netflix, and pictures and videos using my phone as a remote.

It just dawns on me maybe my problem is that that port 61387 was put in there automatically - isn't the port thing only for external connections?

In the setup screen for MCC on the desktop it asks these questions:
"Enable network connections?" Then it shows a port across from that, 61387.
The next line says "Allow internet access to MCC" - and of course I have left that UNCHECKED.

I am convinced now the problem is with this port business - when I ask those more knowledgeable than I about networking, they tell me I only need port forwarding set up in my router for external internet traffic.

How do I set up a completely internal - NO OUTSIDE ACCESS - simple system with MCC to merely function as a remote control?  The instructions very much need a section on how to set up the system for that scenario.

Thanks very much!

In attempting to connect to my desktop in a local network only, no outside access, I removed the port number setup in MCC on the desktop.  But in MCC on the Android, it wants to know the password for the computer - does that mean the network passcode?  I rather don't think so... Does it mean the password to the computer?  That would be trouble, because of course I have multiple users set up on the Windows 7 desktop.  OR is it no password at all?  Am I correct in thinking the port is unnecessary because I don't want any outside world access?

Please refer to my earlier post, especially the last one for more details.  Thanks for ANY help anyone can provide!

Sorry for the late reply. I'm very busy in the moment.

That's very strange. It looks like you are not connected via WiFi but via EDGE or something. To make things easy you should use the ip for now.

First it's important that you get the correct ip adress from your computer (and not using a name when it results in trouble). The next version of MCC will assist you to get the correct ip but for now you have to get it by yourself. Open a command shell (Windows > Run > cmd) and type ipconfig. Find your local network connection in the results and get the IP from the IPv4-Adress line. It should be something like 192.168.x.x. Now type ping 192.168.x.x (replace this with your ip). You should get a reply like that:
Code: [Select]
Reply from 192.168.178.21: Bytes=32 Zeit<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.178.21: Bytes=32 Zeit<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.178.21: Bytes=32 Zeit<1ms TTL=128
The type ping computername (replace computername with your computers name). It should show the same result as above. You can get your computers name by typing hostname.

WMC and MCC server must run. You can check MCC server is running by looking into your taskbar tray (on the right) and loock for the MCC server icon. Now check your mcc server settings and compare it with them from the attached screenshot. Because you don't want internet access it's not required to set a password in the server settings (Network auth setup). But if you set it here, you have to enter it in the MCC client also. The password is NOT the Windows user password. You have to enable network connections and to use a network port (use the default port 63187). The same port has to be set in the MCC client.
Do you have any 3rd party firewall running on the Windows PC?

On your android phone you should see a WiFi icon in the top notification bar. Your mobile connection should be disabled automatically by the phone if WiFi is connected. Open the ping tool on your android phone (I prefer "Pinger") and try to ping your computers ip adress. You already said this works. It's a must that the ping works properly. If this isn't working, you have a wrong ip or a connection problem between Android and Win7.

Now open MCC on your phone and open the settings. Enter the ip adress which you successfully pinged into the computers list. The MAC adress isn't required. Check the network port (63187). Go back and MCC should try a connection. There is no timeout in MCC. It's retrying a connection endless. If it's not connecting after some seconds, hit back and post the error message here please.

Another thing you can try if the conection isn't working and you only have the Windows Firewall enabled with no extra 3rd party firewall. Go to system panel > system & security > windows firewall. On the left panel click "Enable or disable Firewall". Choose "Disable Windows- Firewall" for both network profiles. Now restart your computer and retry the connection to MCC.

I'm looking forward to your answer and I'm sure that we can get it working.

Regards
Markus

Hallo,

Fehlermeldung Transport endpoint is not connected"

Was muss ich nun tun, damit es klappt. Langfristig soll das ganze ja sogar übers Inet laufen...

bthw:

http://forum.mediacentercontrol.com/index.php/topic,130.msg496.html#msg496

Also nochmal.

Router:

  • Connect to server
  • Bei erfolgreicher Verbindung bekommt man folgendes Resultat: "# # # A U T H # # #"
